In this poetic essay film, Mozambican filmmaker Inadelso Cossa returns to the village of his childhood after many years in order to bring the memories of the civil war that devastated Mozambique from 1977 to 1992 back to life. He meets his grandmother Maria, who is now suffering from the first signs of Alzheimer’s: between truth and fiction, remembering and forgetting, AS NOITES AINDA CHEIRAM A PÓLVORA bears witness to the resistance of human memory. Cossa uses the tools of cinema to win back the lost fragments of history and to encounter the ghosts that continue to inhabit the darkness of society’s silence. The film celebrated its international premiere at this year’s Berlinale Forum. Thomas Kaske, the film’s German co-producer will be attending the screening. (fw)
